Freedom Gardens: Planning Your Garden

We've officially launched a new show - Freedom Gardens - Saturdays at 2pm EST.

Last year we made a major life change: we sold our house of 17 years on a little suburban island off the coast of Georgia and moved an hour south to the country, with 3 acres and a desire to be as self-sufficient as possible. My previous gardening experience was limited to container gardening, so I’ve had to learn a lot in the past year! I started with one small garden area for the spring, which did well for fresh food but did not produce enough to save for the winter. My fall garden I started later than I should have, so it did not produce as much as I would have liked. And in both gardens I felt like so much space was wasted! So I went to work researching how to maximize my space to produce the most food for our family and animals. Mostly I realized I need to get organized; all of this will be much easier if I put extensive work into the front end, to get the most results on the back end. This first show is the result of that research and organization: I delve into intercropping and companion planting as well as high density gardening, and then actually make a garden plan on the computer. Over the next few weeks and months I’ll put that research into action and we’ll see what we get!

I truly believe this is going to be the most important show that we do, for all of our futures. The weekday news show is important to know what’s going on in the world and what’s coming, and the Sunday show is our favorite: a combination of spirituality, history, and good old conspiracy theory. But this show will actually help us prepare for what’s coming: to be able to work the land and feed our families the old way. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did, and please feel free to leave a comment below with any questions or suggestions. Happy planning leads to happy planting!
